No seriously, why can't we be friends?

Planet Earth is a mystery. So much life has existed on our planet, and compared to all that; humans are like a speck in it's history. Other life forms have existed on Earth, and no matter how big they got they eventually fell. Now the only remains of them to remember them by are fossils. Eventually, that's going to happen to us. But the thing is, we all know that. Just like we know about the inevitability of death, we know that one day we will be as confusing and old as cave men. So if we all know we only have this short amount of time on Earth, why do we spend so much of it fighting?

There has always been violence among humans. Ever since we started making small communities and settling down, we have felt the need to prove who is stronger. Wars have been fought for petty disagreements, thousands of people died because a few people in power had an argument. On top of all that, we discriminate all through out history. Women aren't strong enough, black people shouldn't have rights, Native Americans need to clear off their own land, and any kind of difference in looks or beliefs is just unnatural. Yes this was all in the past, but things are not as modern as they should be. Women don't get paid the same amount as men, black communities in America are extremely poor, and Native Americans are still fighting for their rights. (And clean water) In the short amount of time provided on Earth, humans have managed to mess everything up.

We do know there is only one Earth, right? And it's not like humans are so important to this planet; in fact if humans suddenly disappeared, life would be better for fish and plants. We wouldn't be around to disturb or kill them anymore, which would give them an opportunity to live. Earth would heal itself, and after about 30 million years there wouldn't be any trace of human existence on Earth. That may look like a long time to us, but considering Earth is 4.543 billion years old, it isn't a long time at all. Of course, scientists have been trying to find life outside of Earth, and see if we can live somewhere else after more wars break out and our planet is too hot to live on, but that need shouldn't have been there in the first place! If we all know we only have one chance of living here we should make the most of it. We should spread love instead of hate, accept differences instead of pushing them away, and take care of our environment instead of adding heat and pollution to it. After all, this is the only life we are going to live on the only planet with life. (That we know of.) Lets make the world a better place.

Sourdough Bread Journey

I've always been interested in baking bread and I recently took on the endeavour of baking sourdough. Immediately, I started to hear how difficult sourdough bread is to bake due to the the time consuming aspect of baking the bread properly. Even before this journey, I knew that bread-bakers always attributed sourdough to a very difficult bread. So, I started this journey with my guard up, expecting to make many mistakes that would result in uneatable bread.  Guess what. They lied.  I'm not saying it was incredibly easy, there are plenty of lessons I've learned through my mistakes. But those mistakes do not mark a difficulty for me, they mark my accomplishments. I've made mistakes I never thought I could make through my journey of baking sourdough, but they taught me valuable lessons and I don't regret a single mistake I made.  I decided to dust off my blog after taking to a friend about sourdough, and all she had heard about it was that it was the most difficult th...

Book Review: Convenience Store Woman

Keiko sees herself as an essential part of her community; someone who makes sure everyone has what they need whenever they need it, and someone who keeps everything organized for their convenience. Her work is very important to her, she is very dedicated to her job to the point where it's her central focus in life. Work has been the only thing in her life that's made sense, it gives her purpose and she feels safe in that. Keiko is a convenience store woman. Obviously, her family and friends find it very concerning that she's happy working at a convenience store for seventeen years, and that she's never had a partner, which makes her an "other" in their eyes. The thing is, Keiko knows how she is perceived and she doesn't care. She continues happily working at the store until Shiraha, a new hire at the store, moves into her apartment. "Convenience Store Woman" explores the idea of relationships viewed by society, and how society can make you feel f...

Students telling their stories

I think the greatest way teachers can help students is by letting them tell their story and paying attention to it. This can be by a short story assignment or just encouraging kids to write. Especially for kids who are bullied--we have a lot on our minds that often goes unsaid because we felt like no one would care. It's important to encourage students to write about their experiences so that they could try to learn from them. A great resource I found, though it seems a little rushed, is National Novel Writing Month or NaNoWriMo. This website encourages people, student or not, to write a "novel" in the month of November and submit it at the end of the month. What you do is you make a profile so that you can start your novel on November 1st. And every time you write, you copy and paste your progress into their website so they can keep track of your progress. You earn badges along the way and even get some feedback from other users. This is a great way to encourage kid...
